Running Injuries

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the knee is the most commonly injured joint, especially in sports where the knees take the brunt of the work. Orthopedic surgeons see more than 5.5 million people annually for knee injuries, which can include Chondromalacia Patellae, also known as “runner’s knee.”

A common symptom of runner’s knee that may indicate you are experiencing it is pain or tenderness close to the kneecap at the front side of the knee. Severe knee injuries often include bone bruises or damage to the cartilage or ligaments. Because of this, it is important to get a knee injury seen by a physical therapist as soon as it develops.

If you are experiencing runner’s knee, or you think you might be, don’t hesitate to contact Austin Manual Therapy Associates today. We will help you find relief so you can get back in the game!

What is Chondromalacia Patellae?

Chondromalacia Patellae or “runner’s knee” occurs when there is a softening and/or deterioration of cartilage underneath the patellae (also known as the kneecap). This happens when there is improper alignment of the patellae over the knee, causing the femur (thigh bone) to move in abnormal ways.
Chondromalacia Patellae can develop from improper form while participating in sports or could be a result of certain anatomical differences in the body. For example, people who are “flat footed” are predisposed to conditions such as Chondromalacia Patellae because the lack of arches in their feet can affect the whole kinetic chain of their lower extremities. Females are also at a higher risk of developing Chondromalacia Patellae due to their naturally wider hips, which have different anatomical effects on the lower extremities.
